Thursday 4th May 2023 saw the first election for the newly formed Taunton Town Council. It was a day of celebration for the Liberal Democrats as they took 19 of the 20 available seats across the wards.
Martin Straus is one of those newly elected as a Liberal Democrat Councillor of Taunton Town Council for Halcon & Lane Ward in Taunton.
Martin is a food and drinks expert after many years in the trade and writes for our magazines. He is very passionate about his community and making positive change.
He told us: “It’s only just sinking in that I’m now Councillor Martin Straus! Activity starts almost immediately as Taunton Town Council has a stand at the Taunton Coronation Celebrations this weekend, and councillors have been invited to participate.
There were 5 Candidates for my Ward – I achieved the highest share of the votes (555) and my colleague Ray Tully gained the next highest vote. The turnout in our Ward was just over 20%. Out of 20 Candidates for Taunton Town Council, Liberal Democrats won 19 seats!”
Martin went on to say:
“It’s a great honour & a privilege, and I wish to place on record my deepest thanks to the many personal friends and Liberal Democrat colleagues who have spent so much time & energy helping me get elected. The last few days have been unusually manic, as so many of our traditional supporters have been away owing to the bank holidays.
I pledge not to let down the residents in my Ward, especially those who voted for me, and the many volunteers who were so supportive”.
We which to congratulate Martin and all the other successful candidates, regardless of their party standing, and wish them all the very best in their role representing their local community and and working with Taunton Town Council.
