Could you help brighten up an old person’s day?

Volunteers to reduce loneliness

Local charity Age UK Somerset is keen to find people who would be happy to share an hour a week with an older person, in the Taunton area, to help reduce loneliness and increase laughter and smiles.

There are many older people in the local area who, because of circumstances – eg, bereavement, transport issues, family moving away – rarely see anyone from week to week and rely on pets or the TV and radio for company.

To combat loneliness Age UK Somerset offers a Wellbeing service which matches older people with volunteers who either accompany them for a gentle walk, visit with them for a cup of tea and a chat, or make a friendly phone call, each week.   Currently there are many older people on the waiting list for this service due to a lack of local volunteers.

The charity’s existing Volunteers report that these roles are not only enjoyable and satisfying but a good way to meet interesting new people and feel like they are making a difference.
